【Daily Record】Watermelon split at the end of summer
In the morning, the summer air suddenly disappeared and I felt a sudden chill in the air. The weather feels like the end of summer, so the children are wearing jackets.
Yesterday, we received two small watermelons from Mr. Matsunaga, who always takes care of us. This year's last watermelon split was held in front of Yumenomori field.
We prepared for an authentic watermelon splitting, using a bamboo sword, and were blindfolded with a towel. The long bamboo sword was difficult to handle, so we tried to cut the watermelon in half while shouting to each other, "Move forward!" and "Find the watermelon!"
First of all, the first split watermelon is yellow inside. "Come to think of it, I think I've never eaten a yellow watermelon before!'' the children said as they ate the watermelon with a fresh feeling.
Even if they can hit the watermelon with the bamboo sword, they may not be able to apply enough impact to it to break it. The second watermelon was beautifully broken by the 6th grade students. The moment it broke, everyone watching was in a state of excitement.
As you can see in the photo, the inside of the second watermelon is red. Watermelon that has been chilled for a long time has an exceptional taste. The watermelons were cut up by the teachers and we ran out in no time.
The seeds inside the fruit are blown out into the field. The students also threw the watermelon rind, which has turned a beautiful light green color. A younger student was worried, "If I throw away the watermelon, won't the field get dirty?'' An older student told them, "Microorganisms will eat the skin and seeds of this watermelon, and the field will become better!'' This field has been waiting for seeds to be planted for a long time. It won't be long before the first seeds are planted.
[3rd grade science]
In the 3rd grade science class, they also observed seeds. The third grade students planted seeds of certain flowers in April. However, the two third grade students did not know the name of the flower. The purpose is to observe the flowers as they grow and discover for themselves what kind of flowers they are.
When they finally saw the blooming flowers, they found the answer: balsam and marigold. However, in the back of the children's minds was the idea that the flowers they had grown might actually have a different name.
And when they look at the seeds they harvested today, they look exactly the same as the seeds they planted in April. For the first time, the children were able to convince themselves that this flower was actually a balsam, and that it was really the same as the flower they had planted in April.
The seeds we planted in April grew with the water we gave them, bloomed, withered, and left behind new seeds. We also feel that the lessons that can only be taught in this way have been left behind by the children. We can't wait for the day when these flowers bloom again.
